What version of James are you using? There might be an issue using the JDBC/ODBC bridge, although I'm not sure why. I'm using James 2.0.pre-alpha w/SQL Server using the inet software JDBC driver and haven't had a problem. Can you open SQL Profiler and watch what SQL commands are getting sent to the users table? Maybe a statement is getting messed up in James or by the JDBC driver.
