At this point, the server is not in production, and has only one user. I figured a
non production quality driver would
suffice. Also, I can't seem to find as well a priced alternative.

Does anyone know a cheap alternative to JDBCODBC bridge?

elsewhere at jakarta the jdbc:odbc bridge is frowned upon because it is not
production quality, and not thread safe, I wonder if either of these issues
are affecting you?
You should try to use dedicated JDBC drivers for SQLServer (or anything
else).
