I too would *love* to hear someone expound a definitive answer to this one.

The problem I've always found  is that if you turn sendmails listening
daemon off, but keep sendmail for "mail",use by scripts and so on, it cant
deliver local mail into james.

The simple answer ought to be to make sendmail use James as the gateway for
all mail, then all your normal *nix mail stuff would work as current
(aliases everything), but I cant get sendmail to accept that I *really**do*
want to use localhost as the mail gateway.
It refuses to believe that this is a legitimate choice, obviously the
writers of sendmail assuming that only insane people would ever want.
