I have found a solution that might be sufficient for me
That is sending email to myself after backup.

Like jar, "would not like to be there though", jail instead of mail and
jailx instead of mailx :), jail being a java app using mailet api

! accepting the same parameters as mail and mailx

ln -s mail jail
ln -s mailx jailx

I too would *love* to hear someone expound a definitive answer to this
one.

The problem I've always found is that if you turn sendmails listening
daemon off, but keep sendmail for "mail",use by scripts and so on, it
cant
deliver local mail into james.

The simple answer ought to be to make sendmail use James as the gateway
for
all mail, then all your normal *nix mail stuff would work as current
(aliases everything), but I cant get sendmail to accept that I
*really**do*
want to use localhost as the mail gateway.
It refuses to believe that this is a legitimate choice, obviously the
writers of sendmail assuming that only insane people would ever want.

:-(
