it certainly looks like a security manager issue, James isn't being allowed
to open the spool repository.
I take it (from the paths) that you're on *nix (what flavour?), are you
running James as root?
What JDK version are you using? I don't know if that makes a difference, but
I'm trying to think of differences there may be between your non-working and
my working set-up.

Of course I'm using db repositories, but it starts correctly with file
repo's too.

Do you have JDK security policies other than the default ones?
