hmm...

downloaded the lastest stable source from apache
compiled code without to much effort nor error
executed the 'run' batch to start the avalon application
verified it was 'running' by telnet:ing into it via port
4555 (all appeared functional)
closed it all down (ctrl-C)
modified the configuration to use M$SQL as described in the
documentation
re-ran the batch
verified it was 'running' by telnet:ing into it via port

added a user - adduser username password
verified that the user was actual loaded into the user table
by opening it up via enterprise manager
set up Outlook mail client to log in and get "mail" - this
failed, didn't write down password
logged back into the application to set password
setpassword - username password
error: username is not an account
