Crytix is old and reputed, but my favorite is Legion of Bouncy Castle(BC) at www.bouncycastle.org. I have spent some time with both and found BC better.
BouncyCastle has a good community and turnaround. It seems more compliant with JCE and PCKS standards. BouncyCastle supports SMIME and that may be good thing for James. It is also used by Apache XML-DSIG project at http://xml.apache.org/security/index.html There is another Crytographic toolkit at http://www.gnu.org/software/classpathx/crypto/crypto.html It seems pretty good too. The licence is GPL but with library exception.
