BTW - there's a freebsd port for libffi in the magic freebsd package
repository (which I don't really understand), but they have not
contributed the patches back to me. Someone has also ported libffi to
Windows using cygwin. I don't know about the mac.

Nobody has reported any libffi problems to me. What's going on?
FYI - the gforth people are going the same route as you, and bundling
libffi along with their distribution.
