I'm not that familiar with autoconf to clearly view how cross-compilation
can be enabled. Especially when some test code has to be run on the
target at configuration time.

Hmm... Nearly nothing really portable or generalizable here.
Mainly addition of some proprietary threading code, removal of
unix-style signal handling and replacement of new/delete operators
by calls to malloc/free.
