I got the problem solved..  I feel really stupid right now because the GNUJSP Archives 
site
doesn't show up correctly in NetScape, so I never read any messages there until I 
tried IE.. It
workd there and I found the answer to my week of struggling !  It was the 
configuration for the
ApJServAction.  It needed to be:
--------------------------------------------
ApJServAction .jsp /example/gnujsp

instead of

ApJServAction .jsp /example/org.gjt.jsp.JSPServlet
--------------------------------------------

The latter one is what is listed in the documentation I believe.
