Yes, you are true. When using SuSE distributions, you have to get the apache sources and then recompile the whole stuff. I was not able to get it to work with the sources provided on the SuSE distributions. For a clean installation, deinstall your apache rpm and then follow exactly the instructions in the apache sources. For me it works fine!
