Neil,
I have to take a slight exception to this as I, as a complete newbie to
Linux/Unix and Apache and having only done "learning" about Java was able to
get apache and Apache-JServ up and running in under 3 days.
That said I will admit that discovering the scope of the configurable paths
was among the most frustrating parts of the exercise. e.g. absolute path or
path relative to document root, apache root or zone root and what does path
to servlet zone mean?
There is a wealth of information available to assist you in setting these
things up the problem is that one must go looking for it.
If you follow the sound advice available on the web site you will get most
of the way there. (In fact I got it all working prior to finding the Zones
pdf)
wrt Apache-JServ much of the documentation is in the source itself. If,
after making use of the stuff that is there, you are getting error messages
try opening up the source and seeing what is causing the error message.
Realizing I could do this helped me solve a couple of problems with my
configurations that would have taken longer than if I'd posted to the list
and waited on the kindness of strangers.
It is an open-source project after all. There aren't any developers taking
your hard earned cash and chuckling about having gotten you to pay for a
product lacking descriptive error messages ;-)
