I don't know the answer to your questions, but you do have the source code
to check things out with yourself.
I do know that 0.9.12 is nothing like 1.0 so there is no comparison to be
made there. I'm sure there is a reason, but I do not know what it is. My
guess is that it is because <location> works just as well as <directory>.
