In the US it is against the law to use OpenSSL for a commercial site due to
patent restrictions put on by those nice RSA people. Luckily, I believe, the
patent on their stuff expires in about a year.
Since it is a commercial site where you are collecting money for a service,
that gives RSA all the more power to come after you and sue your ass for
infringing on their patent.
Stronghold costs money because they had to purchase a license from RSA in
order to distribute and sell their product in the USA. That is what you are
paying for when you buy it (well, not all of that...but a good chunk i'm
sure).
Of course all this information that I just regurgitated is available on the
respective websites (read the faq).
