Jon has an attitude. It is a disciplined one - this list is for certain
purposes and no other. It is for desperate cases and legitimate problems,
not for things that are covered in the documentation.
Bill, do you know what a Nazi is? It isn't just a random epithet to sling
at somebody who's a pain in the butt. Nazis are people who commit
genocide or who advocate genocide or who idealize and pretend to be such
people. The Nazis killed over 8 million people in world war II, and their
world view started a war that cost the lives of over 30 million people.
That's what a Nazi is.
Granted, some of Jon's responses have rubbed the wrong way. Martha
Stewert he ain't (on the other hand, Martha Stewert doesn't write
software). But just because he is tactless is no reason to call him a
Nazi. Rude, yes; a Nazi, no.
Words have power, Bill. You need to think about what you write and what
you say. So does Jon, but I am writing about you right now. Your writing
is under your control. You have the power to set a good example of
civility for the rest of us. You could have, for example, written, "Is it
just me or is Jon rude?"; or you could have written, for example, "Sorry,
but it isn't clear to me, would you please help me?".
The reason why I am sending this to the list instead of to you privately
is because there is a lot of this uncivil crap floating around The
Internet. I am offended by it, and I am responding to it by sending
Strongly Worded Letters (SWLs) to lists on which it appears. Bill, I too
am offended by your comment, and I expect some sort of contrition.
