Oh yes.

/usr/local/apache/bin

Yes, I set that with the following switch:

--with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs

It fails with:

could not find apxs
configure error: If you did not specify a valid --with-apache-src directory
                         then you must specify a valid --with-apxs path

I did not do the first (chose not to do a source operation, but DSO)
but did the second - many times. Maybe something associated with Perl. We're running 
5.005_003

Could it be looking for a later/different Perl since the next line of the error log is:

'checking for perl'

then it hangs
