As I said this really helped. In addition to the steps mentioned in this guide I had to do one additional thing, which is to manually change some versions on the sample modules. As that has not been picked up by the maven release plugin. I didn't want to edit the guide to add this step as that is not really a scalable approach to the issue at hand. We need to some how let the maven release plugin know that these sample's versions need to be changed too.
I guess the main problem there was that all the samples poms do not refer to the axis2 parent as it's parent. I guess that has historical reasons where people wanted to just build the samples, without taking the hassle of all the axis2 dependencies. I guess that is a separate problem that needs to be addressed separately and what we have done is not exactly the solution for that, which introduces lot of maintenance headaches.
