Michael,

I ran this new patch against our big index and it works very well.  If I have 
time, I'll run some benchmarks to see what our real-life performance 
improvements are like.  

Note that I'm only running it for our read-only snapshot of the index, however, 
so this hasn't been tested for writing to a large index.
