Heh, you are correct!  The only place where we change refCount, we also always 
call ensureOpen.  So there's [currently] no way for it to slip past zero 
without ensureOpen noticing.

Still I'd prefer to leave it, defensively, eg in case things ever change such 
that refCount could become negative.
