I think we may be forgetting that many of the people on the list are
probably new to programming, the Internet, and discussion lists, and aren't
aware of the etiquette involved.

For an oveview of discussion list etiquette see (some of this might be
specific to Mozilla's forums, but most of the information is applicable to
all internet forums, discussion lists, mailing lists, or google groups):
http://www.mozilla.org/community/etiquette.html
And remember *"be kind to newcomers"*.

For people new to programming and discussion forums Eric S. Raymond's essay
titled *"How To Ask Questions The Smart Way*" is an essential read. This is
a good introduction to the hacker culture (read the essay, hackers ~=
crackers), and will make your life easier when you have to ask questions:
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

At the very least read the *"Before you ask" *section:
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html#before

"When you ask your question, display the fact that you have done these
things first; this will help establish that you're not being a lazy sponge
and wasting people's time. Better yet, display what you have *learned* from
doing these things. We like answering questions for people who have
demonstrated they can learn from the answers."

If you don't know who "Eric S. Raymond" is and why his writings should be
worth reading, the I offer you this:
