There are in my mind 3 advantages for SUN to do so:

1- change perception that java is proprietary
2- not pay for all of javasoft and get quality software
3- ride the OSS wave as official submitter to ISO

java is poised to win in an open source format.

1- Java won't splinter in OSS, others haven't.
2- If OSS, language becomes standard tool and libraries become part of
the standard infrastructure (I love RMI)
3- As OSS Java is there to stay (whereas SUN ... well;)

It's a natural step in moving forward.
However from reading the press release I dont' have the impression
that SUN has completely let go yet.. there is talk of charging
royalties if you ship products.
Too many clueless MBAs can be a disadvantage. Got milk?
I am not sure they still completely get it. hee hee.
