I know of multiple organizations using mod_perl in a production environment. 
If memory serves, hotmail is one, but that could be incorrect.

I fail to see how your failure to realize that CGI is not a stone ages
technology has any bearing on Sun.  What marketing types and the real
programmers say and do can be very different things.  It is unfortunately
not all that uncommon to compare a current version of one's own product to
an outdated one from someone else for marketing purposes.
