Alas, all of the porting has been done on redhat 5.x. Last alpha CD was 5.0,
last intel CD was 5.2. My alpha has been (internet) upgraded, at various times,
so the pedigree is somewhat difficult to respond to.
I tried for a little while in using the ( just the ) glibc 2.1.x . My first
attempt at installing the lib seems to have gone well ( system came up, not too
many programs broke ), and was able to use the system. With a little bit of
changes to the JDK, I was able to build. BUT THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT RAN!
looked like it just started, and then just deceided to sit down! I needed to
build the JDK, so i ousted the glibc 2.1.x.
recently tried to reinstall the glibc 2.1.x series again. this time not so
lucky. Had to rebuild the root partition ( actually stole a partition from
NT/alpha ) from the 5.0 CD. upgraded the cc + gdb/pthread + glibc 2.0.x -29
software and here I am.

There is a jdk 118 for alpha, but again for Redhat 5.x.

A redhat 6.0 series would mean duplicate set of bins for 5.x & 6.x . I just
have enough ISP space for a JDK1.2 binary for the 21064 processor, and the
'.jar' file. ERGO all distribution would have to be done by mirrors.
I do not yet have a RedHat 6.0 CD for my alpha( nor 5.2 ) . BUT I have
downloaded ( at 24kb ) the redhat 6.0 to my intel. i'll see if a nfs build is
possible. Maybe i'll soon see the 4CD redhat archives at the store/computer
show real soon.

Thats my story.

BTW whats with fonts?. If u were to get the URW fonts, or the instructions from
blackdown about fonts, u sould be able to work with them ! But they do cost in
cpu cycles - in JAVA & in X !. Instead of lesstif, have u used a motif? ( ie
from metrolink ? .might ask if they got a 5.x & 6.0 versions avail?)

AND yes, jdk 1.1.x is mucho faster that 1.2. BUT jdk 1.2/alpha has sound !
