I believe the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL was due to a change in the threading model in the 2.4.x kernel's. The release notes for RH 7.1 said that they were waiting for the JDK's to fix their "broken assumptions", which has apparently been done by Sun and Blackdown. I'm pretty sure I have tried LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 with every one of those kernels, but I'm not 100%, I'll try again. It really is a bitch of a stability problem, very worrying.
