You might also look at our Piccolo framework:

It's a framework for building zooming (or just standard 2d) interfaces. I think
it's a thinner wrapper around Java2D then is JHotDraw. It has fewer built in
patterns, but it has a simpler class hierarchy and we hope that makes it easier
to use. It also has better animation support and all objects support arbitrary
affine transforms.
We would appreciate any feedback.
