well, i think 1.4.0 is rough at best - we went straight to 1.4.1 and apart from the pretty flaky print APIs, it seems okay.
one word of warning-you need to get the latest Sun One Studio (v4 update 1) and this has a bug in that it will not go into the class debugger in MDI mode, although it does work in SDI.
