The reason why I recommended a BufferedImage, is that _reading_ from VolatileImages is quite slow. Have you already tried a BI? When using a VolatileImage painting will be fast, however reading the VIs contents is slow.
A BufferedImage is slower to paint to, but access to pixel data is more or less free.
