Yup, that's because of the insistence of the J3D team to write as much
of the code in Java as possible. Dumb move. There is no point buying
high-end hardware to run your apps on. You don't gain the wonders of
hardware accelaration because half the rendering cycle is spent in
interpreted code. If you want to run J3D faster, buy a bigger CPU, not a
faster graphics card.

This appears to be due to normal flipping. It seems to interpret the
normals in the opposite direction to everyone else. We've noticed this
on some models of ours, but not on others so we're not really sure what
the problem is.

Yes, some weird video driver problems. Again, we haven't figured this
out, but our local SGI reps are well and truly aware of the problem
(because we keep phoning them every day to see if there is a fix).
