I'll be gentle: Java Applets run in a sand box and except under controlled
situations, they can never access the kind of information you are asking of
them. This is one of the basic philosophies of Java applets that cause all
of us headaches, but in which most of us see the wisdom.

There are ways to do this, though. Just not as straightforward as you
suggested.

Here's a thought, something I've been thinking of for quite a while. (I
however don't
have near the expertise required)

This is all under the assumption that a Java applet could get system
information like
Video card make, memory, CPU speed, operating system, and browser info.

But it seems that some of you Java - Geniuses should be able to write a
server based
program and applet that, when accessed by a client browser would record
system
configurations and frame rates and anything else you can think of. The
results could
be bench marked and posted in tables or graphs. The applet would have to do
the
performance data gathering then transmit the results to the server app to
eliminate
any noise factors like modem speed or network congestion.

I think that, if possible, this kind of "real" data would be helpfull to us
all.

(P.S. if I'm completely out of my mind in suggesting this, be gentle in
correcting me)
