Actually, I am a real person and am building a real multiplayer world =)
We can currently hold about 20 people at any given time, but that is because of
our server
(a wimpy single processor machine)
and because of the unique capability that I have added to this virtual world
Basically, it allows for real-time avatar movement, for you to create any avatar
you want and add it to the world without having to close your client, but still
have your avatar update to all other users, this same concept can work for any
object you create as well, behaviors, interactions and data can be transported
with the avatars and the objects.
Simplistically, my server connects to msaccess on a windows nt machine
and I get about 20-25 frames per second on my client machine using a tnt2 ultra
card with about 20 people in the environment
Yes, this will be available soon.
You could easily check out http://bang.this
they have a innovative/limited example of java3d multi-user environments
