The effect you are seeing may be coming from back-face culling.
But I am just guessing. Without seeing the image or the code
I can't tell.
If you didn't use a PolygonAttributes component in the Appearance
and set the culling to CULL_NONE, the the default culling (which
doesn't render back facing polygons) will be in effect. In this
case, if a back face of a polygon is viewed, it is as if it isn't
there.
This is discussed in some detail in Chapter 2 of the tutorial.

The discussion of the hole is simply that GeometryInfo objects
can create surfaces (usually planar) with holes in them. It was
not a reference to something done wrong.
