The poor performance is probably due to the fact that the linux version
relies on Mesa which, as far as I know, is not hardware acceleerated. At
SIGGRAPH 99, SGI was talking about an accelerated version of OpenGL they
were developing for Linux but I don't know if it has been released yet.
Assuming it has a similar API that can be used by the Linux Java3D
implementation, that might solve your performance problem.
You should remember that Java3D on Linux is still in its infancy so
performance will probably be an issue for some time.
