I have been doing some (VERY limited) benchmarking on several different
platforms, and so far Java3D has performed extremely poorly on SGI machines.
We ran our test application on several different NT machines in addition to an
SGI O2 and an SGI Onyx2 (we have not yet tried it out on our SGI Octane),
varying the number of objects in the scene (i.e. Shape3D nodes) between 1 and
1000.

On average, the frame rate on the O2 was around 1/3 that of the various NT
machines we tested it on, while the frame rate on the Onyx2 was about 3/4 the
frame rate of the NT's.

For comparison, we wrote the identical program (well, as far as we could tell,
they are pretty much identical) in OpenGL, and the O2 was about 25% faster than
the NT machines, while the Onyx2 was about 100% faster.

One of these days, when I compile the data and organize it a little better,
I'll post the full set of results. Obviously, this is just one application,
and it is being run on a limited number of machines, so this is NOT a thorough
benchmark! However, the differences are noticable enough that they seem worth
mentioning.

Anyone else out there get similar results?
