Hi,
I wouldn't call myself a pro at j3d, but it seems to me that you need
separate Shape3d objects for each face. Since the rendering only looks at the
shape (and may even subdivide quadralaterals) there is no way to control the
appearance of a subset of a shape's geometry.
As for the second part, I think you're in trouble again. I don't know of any
way in j3d to assign two sets of material properties to the same shape. The
next problem you run into is backface culling. If you make separate shapes for
inside and outside using the same geometry, it is possible that the one facing
you may be culled because the renderer thinks it is behind the one facing away
from you (and you see nothing). To avoid that you have to separate the
surfaces by a small epsilon. Watch out for corners were you see the inside of
one trying to mate with the outside of another.
