But i know.

All we have to do is to wait till JRE1.3 release. For the
last 3 or 4 days i have been digging into new features of manifest
file supported by this new release (well, it's RC2 so far, but the
guys promise it would be released in the end of April). In the
manifest file u r just writing what extensions your application needs,
some other things, and here u go! - the extension is automatically
downloaded (moreover, a progress bar is being showed during the whole
process of downloading!) and is put into ext dir of SDK and
JRE(Plug-in). Moreover, putting special entry in the manifest file of
the extension, native installers (like the one java3D has) could be run
automatically. All u need is wrapping java3d-....exe distributive file
into .jar, add manifest file with special entries, and Plug-in would
automatically run NATIVE installer upon downloading the .jar with this
installer. Well, i can say that practically all problems concerning
distribution would be resolved in this next release. So, we just need
to wait less than a month now. But... I already tried these new
features with RC1 and ... Nothing happened! The extensions are nicely
downloaded, but are NOT installed into ext dir. Neither native, nor
Java installers are being called. I will try to do the same things
with RC2 and let know the results, if anyone here is interested. One
more thing: these bugs of the Plug-in were noticed not by me only, but
by some other guys as well (see the forum on Java Plug-in).

Currently i'm going to write my own extensions installer (a trusted JRE1.2
applet). Well, it would have limited features, but it should work.

vladimir

PS: if u got interested by the new features of manifest file in
JRE1.3, here is a link to the page with more details:
