You are lucky to work on Linux. There are a lot of issues to deal with I'm
afraid. If you can read Danish they are described in a book (on the web),
see http://www.sslug.dk/linuxbog. I expect you dont !

Mesa is an OpenSource OpenGL implementation. Thus no problems with that.
The issue is that if you upgrade to XFree86 4.0 you can get hardware
accelleration
else not. And XFree86 4.0 only supports 3D acceleration at this moment for
Voodoo3 and Voodoo Banshee cards (cost is very low of such a card). Mesa is
part of the XFree86 4.0 distribution (http://www.xfree86.org).

You can download the java and java3D from Sun web or from blackdown
(www.blackdown.org).
You must though follow the installation instructions with the fonts (located
at
http://www.gnome.org/fonts). Please note that if you use older than XFree86
4.0 AND
RedHat (and probably others) you use xfs (X font server). xfs use setup file
in
/etc/X11/xfs instead of the normal /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

Another issue you should be aware of is that Linux har a poor implementation
of
AWT 2D grafics. I don't know but I think you should avoid it and use swing
instead.
It's not buggy, only very slow.

Feel free to ask if you have problems. Good luck, Linux is great :-)

Subject: [JAVA3D] Java3d and Linux

Hi everybody,

I worked with Java3D 1.1.1 under Windows NT until now.
But now I am forced to work on a Linux platform.
I had a look at www.blackdown.org.
Am I right that there is no release for Java3D 1.2 yet?
Which are the differences between Java3D 1.2 and Java3D 1.1.3 (which I
can get for Linux, right?)?
I am especially interested in the picking functions, because I never
got my application to pick lines and points trustworthy.

The requirements for Linux mentioned are first Mesa 3.1 (is this similar
to OpenGL? And where do I find the right download link on the site
www.mesa3d.org)
On the other hand I need Blackdown Java2 SDK v1.2.2-RC4 (right) I didn't
find that as well at Blackdown.

Thanks for any help in advance

Desiree
