Theres one good thing about a good piece of work available for free
(Open GL): everyone tends to rely on it, instead of re-developing the
wheel (Direct 3D?).
Since there are lots of inertia in businesses and homes, only a major
earthquake could remove OGL (and D3D - the other wheel, but for some
routes only) from the majority of desks, in the next couple of years.
Can you guess what is going to happen after two years? I can't. But
trying to do so, maybe one should watch for Sony/Nokia/Westwood and the
likes, and not be so sensitive about MS/SGI/Sun/Nvidia...
Nevertheless, our ability to continuously evolve is the key for the
success of each one of us (remember Darwin?), and I dont see that any
API can be a core competence of anyone, but just a tool.
