This is probably not proportional, check with a small double size vrml, you
may see it does not use twice as much, but an amount which may allow you to
compute the approximate : size of vrml->memory needed relation;
You are also aware that unless you specify the -mx???m in you java command
line, your VM by default will not use more than 64meg, In you case, it can
not work as you even say:

so do the test to see if it can be done and if so, increase your JVM memory
limit
