Jerry,

If you have a program in C which does the serial communication,
you can use JNI to share data between Java3D with the C program.  I just
did that for a project I am working on and works just fine.

I use it to poll a device  after Java3D draws every frame,
using a behavior which
wakes up every frame.  Look at the Java3D documentation for:

WakeupOnElapsedFrames

JNI is very well described in SUN's tutorial on Java.
