Markus and others -
Sun is putting alot of engineering resources into Java 3D. The development of
Java 3D is a high priority within Sun. The actual work comes out of the Sun
division that sits with the OpenGL and hardware graphics engineers. We have
ongoing plans for future releases.
Regarding the OpenGL issue you bring up, you must remember that Java 3D is not a
replacement for OpenGL or DirectX. It never was. If you have lots of OpenGL
expertise for different platforms, know how to do multiprocessing, view frustrum
culling, create good triangle strips, etc., and have lots of time, then you
could probably write a portable, highly tuned graphics application yourself. A
main goal of J3D is to allow you to get applications up quickly and that perform
well. Another goal is to allow you to concentrate on your content, and not worry
about each pixel or triangle strip.
There is lots of work to be done with Java 3D. Let us know what you need and we
can make sure that the engineering team understands this. Our booth at JavaOne
was quite busy and more and more real applications are appearing.
