Hi!
We are using Java3D to create a virtual office environment. This
environment is used to develop and test simulated robots which try
to do something sensible based on information obtained via visual and
ultrasonic sensors. The sensor data is calculated in real time using
J3D API.
As the whole system is distributed and data has to be sent over network
for processing, we are using mainly off-screen rendering.
If the virtual environment is realistic enough, and the simulated robot
model resembles the real one closely enough, then very likely the results
can be readily used for the control of real robots. Use of simulation in
developing basic robot behaviors greatly speeds up the whole process as
e.g. neural nets can be trained automatically. And as we are a rather
poor institute (;-)), reduced cost is a great thing, too!
