Yes the com.sun....vrml97 loader does support textures, however, a newer one is available at http://www.x3d.org/

        For the person having the problem with the J3D error, if you are using windows make sure that your path points to the j3d.dll file.  And if anyone knows, does the sun.com.j3d.loaders.vrml97.Loader allow you load the VRML object and its textures.  I tried the NCSA's loader and it doesn't support textures.
