yes this card is one of the slow dogs.

RAGE PRO AGP is ~3 years old. RAGE PRO AGP is contemporaneous with Voodoo2.
It isnt as good at fillrate as Voodoo2, and doesnt do much multi-texturing.
Any card that cannot do significant multi-texture is old.

~2 years old but aging cards are: ATI RAGE 128, 3Dfx Voodoo3, Matrox G200,
nVidia TNT/TNT2.

more recent cards are:ATI Radeon, 3Dfx Voodoo5, Matrox G400, nVidia
geForceI/geForceII. G400 is the oldest of these IIRC, but does the cool
bump-mapping thing.

state of drivers: always check the IHV website for updates. keep older revs
that work "well-enough" around, since sometimes new updates introduce new
bugs.

Note the initial release of Windows 2000 had a small number of issues which
adversely affected graphical performance on certain graphics cards. The
majority of these issues have been addressed in the Direct3D 8.0 runtime
(and the version of Direct3D 7.0 shipped with DirectX 8.0) and in new
drivers supporting this runtime. Additional performance benefits can be
gained by installing SP1 of Windows 2000. The combination of DX8 runtime,
new drivers and SP1 of Windows 2000 should yield best performance.

On top of that if you have an AMD system you need to make sure to get the
appropriate AGP patches (depending on your motherboard these are either
available from www.amd.com if you have the AMD751 based motherboard i.e. the
Asus K7M, or www.viatech.com if you have a VIA based motherboard i.e. the
Asus K7V). This applies to Win2K and Win95-Win98SE. Other motherboards may
exibit this issue, my list is not complete.

DX 8 should be publicly available in the next 60 days. I give out this info
because its useful now.

Not sure if the same thing rules for OGL, someone with hard data there
should comment.

My card is an ATI 3D RAGE LT PRO AGP 2X. I have an LCD monitor with a
digital (only) input, so not just any old VGA card will do. Judging by the
reports of others, my setup has abysmal 3D performance: An object ambling
through an otherwise empty, compiled scene graph jerks along at (on the
order of) 1 FPS on my AMD K6-300 system.

Thus my question to the List: Can you confirm that this card is one of the
slow dogs, and can you recommend a better replacement for the AGP slot
which has a digital output like mine?

Thanks,

-Carl-
