Also zones are totally independent of other zones.  So
a single Zone is a complete entity unto itself.  Zones
have portal areas where people can transition from one
zone to another but these are specifically mapped.

EQ uses NT machines to run their system and they use
about 20-30 computers per "shard".  A shard is a
complete and independent collection of zones that is
independent of any other shard.

Some computers have multiple zones loaded on them
while other zones, particularly dungeon/city zones,
have only 1-2 zones per computer.

So in terms of control and scalability it's not so
extremely difficult.  Especially considering we're
using Java and can, eventually, look forward to
scaling up to a mainframe if needed.

Just imagine 25 shards * 30 NT computers = 750 NT
computers.  No wonder they find it nearly impossible
to deal with bug tracking issues.
