Hi Don,
the Spaceball is very similar to the Spacemouse.
You can find Java3D classes for the Spacemouse at
http://www.spacemouse.de/software/drivers/WIN-Java3D.html
I'm not sure if it works, but may be it does the job.
You need to install the COMM package to use these classes.
