Avatars can be exported from :

 - Studio Max ( the Bi-Ped Characters )
 - Poser 4 ( with serious flaws ? )
 - Spazz3d

and animated interactively on the Web, and with Java3d.

Yes ... I'm running VRML from Studio Max with Java3d
and Java 1 (on the web), and can control VRML / H-Anim
 avatars with Java 1.1 & Java3d.

To prove the point & let you try it ... here are the links :

 " Studio Max Bi-Ped --(export)--> VRML ---> Web 3D Animation

  -- it _ WORKS _ ...no problem ... ** ANY BROWSER ** with Java

  - Studio Max BiPed Figure Animated with VRML and Java
  - rotate & zoom on the walking figure (zoom with the Control key down)
  - Wait for it to load then double click on _" Studio Max BiPed "_

If _ YOU _ are having with a "scaling problem" _ please _
be very specific, provide the relevant data files, and a
 description of the problem.

Multiple animations can combined ... they can be started,
stopped, and switched under control of a program by the user.

You can make " Nancy " Run, Walk, and Jump

 - Works on Linux, Windows, and Macintosh, Be, EPOC with Java 1.1

Yes, it can be to animated and controlled, but I think
keyframes are a Studio Max thing and not VRML thing, with
VRML you start and stop various animations, and they can loop.

Are you exporting as VRML & H-Anim ? Has that been fixed ?

  - "pat.wrl" is the Poser 4 figure, to see "pat.wrl" double click
on "pat.wrl" in the "avatars" list (you may have to scroll down)

NOTE : Pat falls apart like she was a Chain Saw Massacre victim.
This is an old export, the exports were buggy (Poser's error.)

Rick Goldberg of Sun Microsystems wrote the VRML loaders,
he is a scholar and a gentleman and his loaders have worked
wonderfully, I've been using versions of them since 1999.

VRML-97 is morphing into something newer and better
-- and something much more complicated -- it's getting XML.

Unfortunately support for the old open source loaders
has disappeared and I'm not sure of the status of the
 new loaders.

I hope, and most humbly request, that those developing
 the open source VRML-200x / J3d / X3d Loaders would
give us status report on their progress including :

  - what the old loaders do
  - what the new loader currently do
  - when the new loader will be fully ready.

Please post this information to the following:

  - the VRML, H-Anim, & Java3D Interest mailing lists
  - the comp.lang.vrml & comp.lang.java3d newsgroups.

I thank the people who have worked on the VRML / X3D
 Loaders for their good work.
