-- most email readers allow you to set a maximum size for message retrieval, including
attachments, in particular Netscape and Eudora at a minimum
-- if the message is larger than the maximum, the maximum is retrieved and displayed
(often including gibberish at the end)
-- the mail clients then give you the option to download that particular message, with
attachments, or wait until you are on a high-speed connection, or delete the file
-- this is a life saver, though it does require management, or large files can pile up
on your email server
