I feel like such a dope.

Yep, I got it to work.  Only set the RenderingAttributes, not
TransparencyAttributes.  Just a bug in my code.  Range-ordering works,
billboarding, lighting.  Very nice.

What ticks me off more is that I have been fighting for 2 weeks to get
range-ordered transparencies going and didn't even think about this
method.  Well, I did need it for some semi-transparent objects in the
scene anyway, so I guess it's not a big deal.

Definitely needs a write-up at the org site.  I will see what I can do.
