To add to Dave's post, also have a look at the screen capture code in
the J3d.org code repository. There are a set of utils there for writing
the code onto files on disk. I haven't written up the How to Use guide,
but maybe by reading through the code it might make things a little
clearer for you.

The code repository is http://code.j3d.org/ and the classes you are
looking for a org.j3d.ui.CapturingCanvas3D and
org.j3d.ui.image.JPEGImageCapture
