>From earlier conversations with Sun, I'd guess at Java 3D 1.4 being
roughly summer of 2003. They seem to be doing one major step forward
each year (1.2 was 2000; 1.2.1 is now; 1.3 should be 2002 and 1.4
logically would be 2003). I'm not talking beta but more roughly when
they make their "final release" of each version.

Again I'd argue in favor of dumping/delaying development of 1.3 & 1.4
and focussing on actually getting 1.2.x documented well and running
reliably. As promising and desirable as 1.3 and 1.4 are I'll be
seriously disappointed (again) if they pull too much of the team from
finishing up 1.2.x. For companies that are actually trying to make real
world projects (that our income is dependent upon) it is very scary that
Sun is far more fascinated with the future potential than to properly
polish the current products (and I don't think I'm being impatient as
1.2.x has had a year and a half from initial beta release and it still
isn't well documented or stable).

My attitude would be better if Sun's response to our bugs wasn't "yes...
hmm... there is a bug (we've fixed some that might be related to this in
the upcoming bug fix release)... perhaps it's not a Java 3D bug, what if
you try JDK 1.4 beta?"

I don't want to sound negative though, Sun's engineers have been
fantastic! They are a great company that works very well with
developers. And they are doing a great job at finding and fixing bugs
that come up. We still believe the future for Java 3D is fantastic. I
simply disagree with Sun's management / attitude about product
development.
